Results released this afternoon show Assemblymember Kevin McCarty in second place in the competitive primary election for Sacramento mayor. With the second-place finish among the top four candidates, McCarty will advance to the November runoff.

A five-term member of the California Assembly, McCarty has 22,295 votes, compared to Dr. Richard Pan, the third-place candidate, who has 22,002 votes. The fourth-place finisher, former Sacramento City Councilmember Steve Hansen, who conceded on Tuesday, has 21,678 votes.

With his second-place finish, McCarty will face political newcomer Dr. Flo Cofer, who came in first place with 30,261 votes, or 29.25 percent of the total. With less than 100 uncounted votes countywide, Pan issued a concession statement this afternoon congratulating Cofer and McCarty.

"While today's results are not what we hope for, I am proud of the campaign we ran," Pan said in his statement. "I congratulate both Dr. Flo Cofer and Assemblymember Kevin McCarty for being elected to run for Mayor of Sacramento in the general election in November."

In his victory statement, McCarty extended well wishes to his opponents, saying they all "ran spirited campaigns to help build a better Sacramento. In the end, we are all in this together."

With Cofer and McCarty as the top two finishers, Sacramento voters will elect one of two progressive Democrats as the next mayor. While Cofer has support from small donors and groups like the Wellstone Progressive Democrats, McCarty received substantial support from labor unions.

Elk Grove-based elected officials supporting McCarty are Elk Grove City Councilmember Rod Brewer and Assemblymember Stephanie Nguyen.
