During last night’s general meeting, the Cosumnes Community Services District (CCSD) approved the installation of surveillance cameras in four area parks.
The cost of the surveillance equipment is reported to be $30,758 with annual maintenance of $4,885. The parks to be monitored are Miwok Park, Baker Park, Breeman Park and Kloss Park.
The vote was four to one with board member Doug McElroy the sole dissenting vote.
In the staff report to the CCSD Board of Directors, the cameras are touted as a deterrent to criminal activity such as graffiti and vandalism. The report cited the $260,000 in arson damage to Miwok Park as one justification for the expenditure.
The four parks selected were done so because “they represent the highest priority at this time and are logistically situated to accommodate the particular type of camera system” the staff report said. The report added “Cameras can alert officers to crimes in progress” and could help “reduce liability for frivolous claims.”
The report did not say when installation will occur or when use will begin.
