As Nugget enters Elk Grove, Jennings Wine Cellar closes doors
With much anticipation, Elk Grove grocery shoppers are looking forward to June 25 - the grand opening date of Elk Grove's first Nugget Market.
Located at the site of a former Ralph's grocery store on Laguna Blvd., Nugget's entrance is a positive for Elk Grove. Aside from being a high-quality grocer that offers Elk Grove shoppers another choice, it also keep the strip center that it anchors from declining and becoming a crime magnet.
As Nugget enters Elk Grove, another retailer down the street has experienced a different fate. Jennings Wine Cellar, located at the corner of Laguna and Laguna Springs, offered a large selection of premium wines and a had a wine bar.
It was unlike most retail establishments in town, by Elk Grove standards it was classy and somewhat high-end. Unfortunately, it may have been to high-end and classy for the milquetoast taste in food and restaurants that permeate Elk Grove.
Anyone remember the Sacramento Food Coop - now the home to a Grocery Outlet. Talk about a bad swing of the pendulum.
In any case, we are quite sure Nugget will succeed and bid adieu to Jennings Wine Cellar.

A sad day indeed when Jenning's closed. Bob was a good guy and ran a nice shop. One would have thought the niche Bob created with the wine bar, good selection and decent value would have succeeded. As for the milquetoast audience in Elk Grove, no truer words were spoken; just ask any restauranteur not operating a "chain store". Jennings tried to entertain and educate with some class. Hopefully one day the town will develop culturally speaking but, for now, man cannot live on wine alone. But it's not a bad idea.
