Another unforeseen consequence of General Growth Properties’ delayed Elk Grove Promenade project

If all things had gone according to plan, the Elk Grove Promenade would have been opened this month.

To paraphrase Steinbeck though, the best laid plans of mice and men go awry. Undoubtedly this applies to the Elk Grove Promenade.

Because of the overall hubris displayed by General Growth Properties (GGP) and, by extension the members of the Elk Grove city council who rubber-stamped approved it, the half-constructed strip-mall on steroids lies vacant. It has the potential to become a short-term public nuisance.

As pointed out in an earlier post, the empty-shell Elk Grove Promenade can easily become a crime magnet for every tweaker-methhead-cooper-thief in Sacramento County. Now you can add to the list another use for the dormant strip mall – street car racing haven.

Word has it from reliable sources that the Promenade Parkway has quickly become the street car racing venue of choice not only for Elk Grove, but the entire Sacramento region. Yet another burden placed on Elk Grove by Chicago-based GGP.

Here is a suggestion to the city of Elk Grove – insist GGP install some temporary speed bumps (and don’t forget the signs) along this strip of road. The last thing we need is another fatality from street car racing.
