Schwarzenegger Orders 20,000 Layoffs

Another kick-in-the-head for Elk Grove


After failing to reach a budget, Gov. Schwarzenegger ordered layoff notices to be sent to 20,000 state employees tomorrow.

The shortcomings downtown are well documented. For people in Elk Grove, many of whom are bound to be among the 20,000 laid-off workers, this is just another blow to a local economy already staggering from high unemployment, low sales tax revenues, and persistent residential foreclosures.

How much more can Elk Grove take? All the assembly members and senators would rather play politics than work on the people's business.

If nothing else, it's time for Elk Grove to start working on some shovel-ready projects.
