The Sacramento Area Council of Government (SACOG) announced that as part of the recently enacted federal stimulus package, the City of Elk Grove will receive $5.2 million. SACOG received a total of $76 from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for regional distribution which specifically targets transportation infrastructure projects.
The city will spend $4 million on eight CNG 40' buses, $1 million on the Intelligent Transportation System and $200,000 on improvements to the I-5/Elk Grove Boulevard northbound on-ramp.
According to city spokesperson Fritz Bachman the Intelligent Transportation System:
is a set of interrelated technologies which allow for advanced control and operation of the City's traffic signal system. The system makes use of state-of-the-art traffic signal controllers which are interconnected and can communicate with a centralized Traffic Management Center (TMC) at the City corporation yard. The system allows traffic signal timing to be coordinated along arterial corridors (resulting in reduced travel delay on these streets), to monitor traffic conditions at selected locations, and to make signal timing adjustments from the TMC as needed.Via several projects completed over the past three years, the TMC was established and all signalized intersections on Bond Rd and Elk Grove Blvd between I-5 and Elk Grove-Florin Rd were brought into the system. The stimulus money for the ITS program will be used to partially fund a fiber optic communication link between the corporation yard, the master signal controller at Bond / East Stockton, and City Hall, which will serve to greatly enhance system capabilities.

Uh..four million dollars for...EIGHT buses? $500,000 each bus? Is this really the best way to spend our Federal Stimulus Funds? I am trying not to be too cynical, but it just seems to miss the point...
