Elk Grove City Council member Gary Davis formally announced today that he will seek the Democratic nomination to face Republican Congressman Dan Lungren who currently represents California’s third district.

Elected to the city council in 2006 following a bruising battle against charter council member Dan Briggs, Davis served as Elk Grove’s mayor in 2008. Prior to his position on the city council, Davis was a member of the Natomas (Sacramento) Board of Education.

“I was born and raised in this district. I love serving on the City Council and being mayor. As mayor, I have a strong track record of creating jobs and improving the safety of our neighborhoods,” Davis said. “But the best way to serve my community is to go to Washington and keep up the fight.”

Although Lungren won reelection last fall, he failed to carry a majority of votes in the traditionally Republican district. Last year Obama narrowly defeated McCain in the district.

Gary Davis's comments may lead to Congressional investigation.

If Gary Davis is correct in his statement that DOJ said it would be difficult to get funding because of Mr. Lungren's philisophical position, then DOJ has broken federal policy and law. Federal law prohibits any US Department from considering a Member of Congress' vote or position when making funding decisions.

Gary Davis has essentially accused the Obama Administration, through Attorney General Holder, of playing political games in how competitive grant funding is allocated and breaking the law.

I call on Chairman Conyers of the House Judiciary Committee to open an immediate investigation on the Department of Justice for their violation of policy and law in how they fund grant programs.

I would like to thank Gary Davis for bringing forth this blatant violation of law by the Obama Administration.

This is only of course if Davis is telling the truth about his interaction with a DOJ official. According to one College classmate Gary has a problem telling the truth and keeping stories straight.

Below is a comment that was poasted on the SacBee website under the article about Gary announcing his run for Congress.

Here's my take on him: When he was Student Body President at Sac State, right around 1998/99, there was a proposal then to pass a measure to help build a Rec Center/Arena. He went around to all the different student groups to talk about this measure. The fact that he didn't count on was that I happened to be in two different organizations that he came and spoke at, but never recognizing anyone. In one presentation, he stated that the arena would be a part of the rec center. In the other, he stated that there was going to be no arena and a very scaled down rec center. Well, word spread that he was telling things to different people and ultimately, the measure failed because he couldn't keep an honest answer. So he definitely got off on the wrong foot.

That and when he was Executive Director of the Sac State Alumni Association, he kept doing the same thing...say one thing and do another.

Sorry Gary, you're you-know-what doesn't fly with this Hornet alum.

We're also Hornet Alum - We've known Gary long enough to realize that his abilities as Mayor of Elk Grove and as someone whose word is his bond stands true. As registered Republicans and youth advocates, as well as school administrator (working with "marginalized youth") and a career-technical instructor, we can tell you flat out, that we'd bank on Gary's passion and commitment to our young people any day of the week. This guy keeps his promise, his word and is one of the most straight-shooting people we've met in politics...he's bright, engaging, and "can-do" - if we had more people like Gary Davis running for Congress, we'd get a whole lot more accomplished for the good of the people. No, we don't know what went down over at CSUS (sounds like ancient history) - but we do know what went down in Elk Grove and we do know what's going down for "at risk" youth in our county and this man, Gary Davis, is polar opposites to what some Hornet Alum thinks - he's a man of his word who can't be bought and will serve his constituents wisely and with total commitment to their good! We're voting for Gary and rumors like this will be confronted posthaste by the facts of his service Doug/Geoff Krieger/Educators
