Assembly member Alyson Huber announced the members of the Select Committee on Lowering California’s High School Dropout Rates today.

As Chair of the Committee, Huber will be joined by Assemblymembers Bill Berryhill (R-Stockton ), Julia Brownley (D-Santa Monica), Joan Buchanan (D-San Ramon), Warren Furatani (D-Long Beach), Steve Knight (R-Lancaster) and Lori Saldaña (D-San Diego).

“Today, Superintendent Jack O’Connell announced that the statewide dropout rate is 20.1 percent. When 1 in 5 kids fail to graduate, we know we have a lot of work to do,” Assemblymember Huber said. “We need to find more creative ways to address the problem. Money isn’t the only answer – we need to connect people to share ideas and resources. The Select Committee will work to make sure successful models are being shared statewide and find resourceful solutions to the problem.”

The first hearing of the committee will be held in June.

The committee will focus on examining the problem of dropouts. By hearing from those closest to the problem, Huber and the committee members are seeking to identify the possible causes of the dropout problems and creative solutions.

In addition to the committee members, local educators, administrators, business leaders and other parties close to the problem will be invited to attend and offer their perspective on high school dropouts. There will also be time for public comment.
