Tuesday, April 28th was the first of four public outreach meetings regarding the Sphere of Influence Amendment sponsored by the City of Elk Grove and the County of Sacramento.

What is the Sphere of Influence Amendment? And why should you care?

These amendments, if approved, would effectively double the size of the City of Elk Grove and allow the City’s management team full control and sole discretion for future development. The land in question stretches from Kammerer Road on the west to the Cosumnes River on the east.

Currently, Sacramento County has jurisdiction of the area and has a general plan suggesting the Cosumnes River Flood Plan would not be developed. If, however, Elk Grove became the stewards of this land, this would not necessarily be the case. Elk Grove’s management team says they do not yet have any plans for this expanded land which should raise some concerns for area residents.

This will mean more roads, more traffic, more homes, more retail, more schools, more parks, more taxes, more, more, more. Perhaps most importantly, potentially longer response times for fire and police personnel.

As the City of Elk Grove begins the process of planning for future development and growth towards the south and southeast areas, long-term planning efforts should include plans for the appropriate growth, agricultural preservation, and open space preservation.

There are three more opportunities for the residents and citizens of the area to ask questions and share concerns regarding growth issues. This should not be taken lightly by any individuals living within this region as it will affect the quality of life for everyone residing here now and into the future.

The city already can't manage the current holdings. It is criminally insane to give the city more control and room to mis-manage.

Insanity.
