The City of Elk Grove will hold a grand opening ceremony for the Sheldon Road-Highway 99 interchange this Friday morning.

The city has substantially finished improvements to the interchange that was built in the 1950’s. The newly redesigned and reconstructed interchange now provides safer freeway access and increases mobility for Elk Grove's burgeoning commuter traffic.

“Reducing traffic congestion and improving mobility throughout Elk Grove and the Sacramento region is a priority at the City,” said Mayor Pat Hume.

The celebratory event will be held at the northwest corner of the park-and-ride lot off East Stockton Boulevard. The ceremony starts at 10:00 AM.

Parking will be available in the lot as well. For event or project information, please contact Angela Frost at (916) 478-2203 or afrost@elkgrovecity.org.

It's mendatious to believe that this new interchange promotes the reduction of traffic congestion in and around Elk Grove.

If reduced congestion were a real "priority" as Hume says, then why build thousands of low density homes east of 99, each one forcing two more vehicles on the roadway? If it were a priority, why continue to plan more sprawl?

Throw a parade for a new interchange? For a new Sam's Club and the destruction of local businesses? Please.

Latent demand for this interchange won't take long to absorb the increase in capacity. The real question we need to ask, that nobody asks, is "so, Elk Grove, how many lanes of congestion do you want?"

We didn't like two lanes of congestion. We won't be willing to accept six lanes of congestion either.
