Tax proposals by Jim Cooper lead to endorsement
Adding to a long list of endorsements, Scott Jones announced he has received the endorsement of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association recently in his bid to be to be the next Sacramento County Sheriff.
Jones is facing Elk Grove City Council member and current Sacramento County Sheriff Jim Cooper and former Citrus Heights City Council member and Sacramento County Sheriff Brett Daniels in the June primary.
“Scott Jones is the clear choice for Sheriff,” Jon Coupal, president of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association said. “Scott’s proposals to maximize existing resources are exactly what we need during these difficult economic times.”
Jones has called for every officer with a gun and a badge to be protecting the public or training other officers. Jones agenda includes a proposal for regionalizing public safety by coordinating with all local police departments.
Jones has also called for openness and transparency within the department similar to the programs he initiated in the jailhouse. Cooper was commander of the jailhouse earlier in the decade during a period where several inmates died while in custody.
“I truly appreciate the support from Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association,” Jones said.
“It is disheartening that my opponent, Jim Cooper, is pushing for tax increases when the most pressing issue facing the state today is rebuilding the economy,” Jones said. “To propose more taxes when taxpayers are already carrying an unsustainable burden is ludicrous.”
Last month Cooper, an Elk Grove City Council member, proposed a new tax on cell phones to pay for existing Elk Grove services. In addition, Cooper also proposed raising taxes on rental cars and other businesses that rely on travel and tourism during a debate earlier this year.
