Beginning July 1, the City of Elk Grove will begin implementing two new commercial recycling programs that will significantly increase recycling in Elk Grove, and keep waste out of local landfills.

The City is required by State law (AB 939) to divert 50 percent of the waste materials generated in Elk Grove from landfill disposal through source reduction, recycling and composting programs.

Business and Multi-Family Recycling...
Commercial and multi-family properties generate more than half the waste disposed of in California.  A significant amount of this waste is easily recyclable.

Beginning July 1, all businesses, non-residential properties, multi-family properties (with five or more units), and single-family residential properties managed by an association or other organization, that subscribe to four cubic yards per week or more of garbage collection service in the City of Elk Grove, will be required to implement an on-site recycling program.

The program brochure and other information are available at the Integrated Waste website:  www.egtrashrecycleservices.org.  Free recycle bins are available to Elk Grove businesses and multi-family properties, as supplies last.

The Business and Multi-Family Recycling Program will contribute to the City’s efforts to comply with State law, and will contribute to the City’s commitment to environmental protection, greenhouse gas reduction, and energy independence.

Construction and Demolition (C&D) Debris Recycling
Construction and demolition materials account for almost 22 percent of the waste stream, according to CalRecycle’s 2004 Statewide Waste Characterization Study.  Many of these materials can be reused or recycled.

Beginning July 1, contractors, subcontractors and employees in the City of Elk Grove will be responsible for the proper recycling of construction and demolition debris.  The City’s Construction and Demolition Debris Recycling Program will require that the following five (5) materials be recycled:

   1. Scrap metal
   2. Inert materials (concrete, asphalt paving, bricks, etc.)
   3. Corrugated cardboard
   4. Wooden pallets
   5. Clean wood waste (unpainted, untreated lumber & plywood – fasteners OK)

The C&D processing fee is calculated at building permit at the Development Services Counter.

The program brochure and other information are available at the Integrated Waste website:  www.egtrashrecycleservices.org.
