Lungren Part of Study Committee defending BP, calls the $20 Billion escrow fund a “Chicago-Style Political Shakedown”
Yesterday, as BP CEO Tony Hayward testified before the House Energy and Commerce Committee about the disastrous irresponsibility of the big oil company that led to the worst environmental disaster in US history, there are some people in Washington who are amazingly defending both Mr. Hayward and BP.
The Republican Study Committee (RSC), a group of conservative Members of the House of Representatives, released a statement this week calling the $20 billion BP escrow account a “Chicago-style political shakedown.” Not a single Republican member denounced this position when it was released. Not one.
In fact, the Republican industry-friendly approach was echoed by RSC member and the highest ranking member of the committee that oversees the oil industry, Joe Barton (R-Tx), who not only called the BP accountability fund instituted by the President a “shakedown” but went on to apologize to BP and BP CEO Tony Hayward.
The statement from the Republican Study Committee, which includes Rep. Lungren reads: “BP's reported willingness to go along with the White House's new fund suggests that the Obama Administration is hard at work exerting its brand of Chicago-style shakedown politics… These actions are emblematic of a politicization of our economy that has been borne out of this Administration's drive for greater power and control.”

“It is very evident by this statement that Rep. Dan Lungren cares more about the bottom line of a company - that through its disastrous irresponsibility and carelessness resulted in the worst environmental disaster in US history - than the people of the gulf, our environment and the countless lives that have been affected by their actions." said Frank J. Benenati of the DNCC.

So what else is new from Lungren...guess he also endorsed "sorry for the little people" statement from BP too. Geez, and I thought I just read about how he fights for all the small businesses and how the Health Care bill would be so costly for small businesses, etc., etc. Believe that's called "speaking out of both sides of your mouth".
Where did Lungren say this? Not saying he doesn't agree to the statement as many of us do.
There is a meeting, the first since the accident happened, between the leadership of BP and the President, and the AG who has declared he is taking BP to court on criminal charges is present. It must have gone something like this.
Obama-"I gotta make sure my environmental friends don't get any madder at me so here is what we are going to do. You are going to put $20 Billion into account that my people will oversee"
BP-"That doesn't sound very fair. We have already agreed to pay all legitimate claims and pay for all of the clean-up costs."
AG Holder-"Either you do what the President says or I will file criminal charges against you."
BP-"you mean if we let you have a $20 Billion fund you promise not to bring criminal charges against us for an accident."
Obama-"Now you get it."
BP-"Is there any other option?"
Holder-"No!!"
BP-"Ok then what else can we do but agree."
Obama-"Told you they would do it."
Even BP admits that the spill is their fault, so I'm not understanding who should be held accountable for cleaning it up and making things as right as they can be made. Certainly will never be perfect.
The statement looks like a political manuver, "anything to oppose whatever the Obama administation says or does". Shameful! This disaster should be something we can all get together on to rectify. I think that these congressmen will find that their ridiculous position will prove to be problematic for them, at least I hope so!
Lungren, Obama, Scherman, Cooper, Davis....VOTE THEM ALL OUT AS SOON AS YOU CAN ! ! ! ! All just a bunch of political WHORES ! ! !
