The Elk Grove Police Department will be conducting a sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint within the city of Elk Grove tonight from 8:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m.

The checkpoint will focus on removing impaired drivers, as well as unlicensed drivers from the roadways. Educational materials covering the dangers of driving under the influence will also be handed out to motorist. Funding for the sobriety checkpoint is provided through a grant from the U.C. Berkeley Traffic Safety Center with primary funding from the California Office of Traffic Safety.

Let's see...based on all previous Elk Grovian checkpoints, just over 1% of those contacted tonight will be arrested for DUI.

It seems odd that this needs to be externally funded when such a consistent percentage of our neighbors drive impaired. There is probably no other source of revenue (fines and fees) quite so predictable for our city.
