Sandwiched between presentations on a proposed sport complex and hearing a request for a zoning ordinance to allow an off-site billboard, the Elk Grove City Council decided last night to award the city's vehicle maintenance contract to Sacramento's Downtown Ford.
Elk Grove Ford makes eleventh-hour appeal
The dispute that developed between Elk Grove Ford, Downtown Ford and Elk Grove stems from the city councils December decision to award a vehicle maintenance contract to Elk Grove Ford even though Downtown Ford was the lowest bidder. In response Downtown sought and got a legal judgment in their favor saying the city had violated its own rules in awarding the contract to Elk Grove Ford.
Even though the council had previously indicated they would vacate the contract with Elk Grove Ford and award it to Downtown Ford, Elk Grove Ford's owner Matt Williams plead to have the contract given to his dealership. Williams said among other things that his analysis showed both bids were comparable.
William further urged the council not to award the contract. "I'm here to ask you to postpone the vote on this," Williams said.
During their deliberations council members said that while they support local businesses, they concurred the matter was not properly handled and voted 4-1, with Council Member Gary Davis opposing, to award the contract to Downtown Ford. Mayor Jim Cooper noted that if the city does business exclusively with only Elk Grove-based businesses and violates it own rules, there could be a backlash from other communities toward Elk Grove firms.
"We can't be isolationist here," Cooper said. "It can set a dangerous precedent."
