Suspect previously on probation for assault with deadly weapon

The Elk Grove Police have identified a suspect wanted in connection with the Sunday night murder of 19-year-old Joseph Oropesa of Elk Grove.

On Sunday night officers responded to the Dimple's Record store on the 9600 block of Elk Grove Florin Road regarding a disturbance in the parking lot. The caller indicated that someone was down in the parking lot and that they had heard a gunshot and responding officers and paramedics arrived they discovered that Oropesa had been shot in the head.

During their investigation detectives questioned witnesses and followed up on several tips that led to identifying 25-year-old Ryan Alan Hays (DOB 09/06/1986) as the suspect. Detectives believe that Hays is still in possession of the vehicle that was taken from Oropesa that is a black 1992 Ford Explorer two-door bearing California License 3BHF649.

A records search of Sacramento County Courts show that Hays was arrested in late 2006 for aggravated assault [PC 243(D)] and entered a guilty plea for assault with a deadly weapon [PC 245(A)(1)]. Hays received four years probation.

The firearm that was used in the homicide has not been recovered and detectives believe that Hays is still in possession of the firearm and should be considered armed and dangerous. At this time, detectives are still working on establishing a motive.

Anyone with information the whereabouts of Ryan Alan Hays is asked to call the Elk Grove Police Department Detective Bureau at (916) 478-8060 or Crime Alert at (916) 443-HELP (4357). Callers to Crime Alert can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.00. Tips can also be sent via SMS text message by entering CRIMES (274637) on a cell phone, followed by Tip732 (agency identification number) and the message.

Ryan is a happy go lucky person for every one that knows him would agree. This seems to be untrue. The victim must have threatened his life, ryan is a good person he is not a stone cold killer.

If ryan did this he needs to turn himself in. He is three times the size of the victim i cant see him feeling threatened. Let the oropesa family have some justice and turn yourself in

WOW sounds like we have some really different views here... maybe for the sake of both parties involved you should save judgment! OR ELSE

Wow is right. i forgot "good people" abuse prescription pills and carry around loaded weapons in public. If he is innocent then why is he running away? Taking the victims car isn't going to help his case.

Completely unexpected.. known ryan for a few years and was always very chill. For him to respond his life must have been in danger. Just doesnt seem like him. Reminder...if he took the victims care then I highly doubt what was in it was Ryans. Sad for everyone involved.
