Elk Grove mayoral candidate LaWanna Montgomery is suspected of vandalizing this sign Saturday night.
UPDATED 5:30 p.m.

It is often said politics is a dirty business. One Elk Grove mayoral candidate seemed to go out of her way to prove that point Saturday night.

According to Elk Grove Police, officers were dispatched to Bruceville Road and Elk Grove Blvd. after witnesses saw a suspect spray painting a Sophia Scherman campaign sign. Officers responded to the registered owners address, based on the license plate, where Elk Grove mayoral candidate LaWanna Montgomery was contacted.

Montgomery was located in the garage near the suspect vehicle where officers detained her. After being identified by witnesses Sophia Scherman was contacted and expressed a desire to press charges.

Montgomery was arrested then issued a misdemeanor citation and released. Montgomery could not be reached for comment.Montgomery unsuccessfully ran for city council against Jim Cooper in 2008.

Scherman said  she was shocked when she heard of Montgomery's arrest. "I just couldn't believe it," she said.

According to Elk Grove Polic spokeperson Christopher Trim, there have already been five other reports recently made regarding the theft of three signs and two for vandalism. "Those reports have been assigned for further investigation and at this point there isn’t any suspect information," Trim added.

We have all heard of Chicago style politics, well this might be Elk Grove style politics.

Makes you wonder how often campaigns vandalize their opponents signs. And we just thought it was teenagers with nothing better to do.
