Recently I was reading a section of the New York Times, the 538 blog by Nate Silver. This blog offers what I consider to be the best statistical electoral analysis for this year's Presidential election.
As readers often do, there was a story on the margin that caught my interest and I clicked on it. After clicking, a message popped-up informing me that if I wanted to read further, I would need to subscribe.
The subscription price was very modest, about 99 cents for a four week trial as I recall. Considering the quality of content and appreciation of the cost associated with gathering news, I felt it was a fair proposition.
While news organizations, print ones in particular, struggle with massive changes in how their product is distributed, I believe this pay-for-read model, combined with online ads, is going to become more common. News gathering does cost money that needs offsetting revenue.
Closer to home, while EGN will never be compared to the NYT's, in this millennium at least, we do share a common challenge - supporting an online news gathering service with limited advertising revenues. While we don't anticipate charging for our services, we are asking you to consider a donation to help fund our news gathering.
If you value the information provided here, please consider a donation. Thank you for your consideration.

Yes, I have noticed my favorites have started charging an online fee. While it may be very modest for subscribing to only one, in my case I am having to make choices due to the cost since I access several. I do find it very unfortunate that our local newspaper refers you to FB to comment. I belive most readers of our local newspaper are of the 50+ generation and FB will not be convenient for them to use.
Hope my little contributions helps...just keep up the good work
