Outgoing Elk Grove City Council Member Sophia Scherman to be honored next Wednesday as Gary Davis takes the oath as the city's first directly elected mayor. |
While Elk Grove swears in Gary Davis as the city's first directly elected mayor and council members Jim Cooper and Steve Detrick to another four year terms, the ceremony will also honor outgoing council member Sophia Scherman. A three-term council member, Scherman was first elected to the council in 2000 when the city incorporated.
Scherman, who most recently unsuccessfully ran for mayor, is leaving the council as the district she represented was drawn out of existence because of the decennial reapportionment and the establishment of the mayoral seat.
With Scherman's departure, Cooper is the only original city council member. In 2006 original council members Dan Briggs and Rick Soares were defeated respectively by current members Gary Davis and Pat Hume and in 2008 Mike Leary was defeated by Detrick.
Prior to serving on the council Scherman was a member to the Elk Grove Community Services District and a local business owner. Scherman has not announced any immediate plans following her departure from the city council.
A reception will follow next week's ceremony that starts at 6 p.m. at city hall.

It will be one big love fest. The angels of greed and ego will descend upon the chambers and anoint them all with their pixie dust, while off in the distance, Jack Jones will be heard singing the Love Boat theme song throughout the event. It's enough to make you seasick!
