In a unanimous vote last night, the Elk Grove City Council agreed to raise monthly garbage collection fees to help continue financing of the city's special waste collection facility. That facility, which is currently under construction, is located on Grantline Road across Highway 99 from the Promenade Mall.

The new rates, which will be effective July 1, will see monthly 32 gallon garbage can fees increase 44 cents to $22.44; 64 gallons increased 60 cents to $25.51 and 96 gallons 98 cents to  $31.71.

During his presentation to the city council city accounting manager Andrew Keys noted these increases were less than had previously approved by the city council. The original rate schedule increase was approved in December 2010 and would have allowed for increases that are roughly twice as high as the current increases.

During the brief concil deliberations Council Member Pat Hume said when the rate increase was approved in 2010 he challenged city staff to closely monitor this and only impose what was needed.

"Even though it is a rate increase, it is less than what we had originally projected," Hume said.  "Government taking only what it needs is a good thing."
