In a highly anticipated vote, members of the Elk Grove-South County Democratic Club cast ballots last night to determine which candidate they will endorse in the race for the California Senatorial race between Assembly Members Roger Dickinson and Dr. Richard Pan. Both candidates are seeking to replace Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento), who is being termed out from the state's Sixth Senatorial district.

When the ballots were tallied, Dickinson received 89 votes to Pan's 65.

Although Dickinson won by a comfortable margin, it was not because of a lack of effort on Pan's part. Several club members, all of whom asked not to be identified for this story, expressed concern that membership of the club swelled in recent weeks so that ballots could be cast for the respective candidates, especially on behalf of Pan they alleged.

The meeting took on a political convention atmosphere with campaign staffers for both candidates working the overflowing room at the Elk Grove Public Library. Other area Democrats on hand were Cosumnes Community Services Director Rob Brewer, Elk Grove Unified School District Trustee Tony Perez, Elk Grove Vice Mayor and State Assembly candidate Jim Cooper and Elk Grove Planning Commissioner and Elk Grove City Council candidate Nancy Chaires.

After the vote was tallied, several people still on hand for the announcement that Dickinson prevailed erupted into a loud applause and cheers. Reached by phone after he received the endorsement by virtue of the vote, Dickinson said he was pleased with the outcome.

"I am delighted to have the endorsement of the [Elk Grove] Democratic Club," Dickinson said. "It is a reflection of closely working with people all over the county."

"My campaign for the state senate is fashioned on an appreciation of all our local communities throughout Sacramento County, especially Elk Grove," he added. "This is especially gratifying."

District Attorney Candidate Presentations

In addition to casting ballots for the senate race endorsement, club members also heard a presentation by Democratic candidate for Sacramento County District Attorney, Todd Leras. The other Democratic candidate for District Attorney, Maggie Krell, was unable to attend and had Dr. Pan deliver comments on her behalf.

At next month's club meeting, members will vote on the endorsement for the two Democrats in the District Attorney's race. Below, see a portion of the comments delivered by Leras.

I was very impressed with Mr. Leras. He spoke eloquently and I believe frankly on his background as well as his hopeful future as Sacramento County's next D.A.

Dr. Pan's oratory representing Maggie Krell was rather pathetic. He misspoke several times on the position, referring to it as the Attorney General seat.

Since the current DA has been there almost 20 years, I'm reluctant to vote for her handpicked successor. I believe that change is healthy.

Mr. Leras has my vote.

Mr. Leras has my vote too! We do need a change. He offered a refreshing perspective to dealing with crime and punishment. I encourage everyone, independent of party affiliation to take an opportunity to learn more about Mr. Leras.

So the Elk Grove Democrats are soundly behind Dickinson. So much for listening to the venom from the dais from the Elk Grove City Council regarding Dickinson during the appointment process.

Good luck Roger!

My thoughts exactly Dems Speak. Not only that, who do we see and hear spending so much time here in EG helping people...none other than Dr. Pan! Being a registered Democrat those 89 votes mean zip to me...my vote is for someone who actually cares and that is Dr. Pan.

Comments made after the vote by members makes this endorsement pretty much null & void IMO. Very unprofessional!

Thank your for posting the video of Mr. Leras. I think after 20 years, there needs to be a change in the hierarchy at the DA's office. Scully is a decent public servant, but a new administration is probably long overdue.

As for the Dickinson-Pan race, are there any Republicans entered in this race or are they throwing up a white flag?

Looks like the whole gang was there: Perez, Brewer, Chaires, Cooper - The democratic inner circle. Yep that's the leadership of our city - hmm me thinks their more about themselves and their political future than what's best for our city. My guess is in cases like this if you're one of them you back the person that's going to help you the most if they back you, not for the most qualified.

Too bad Roger Dickinson couldn't return the favor and find a local Democrat to run for Elk Grove City Council against Pat Hume.

Lost children at a garden party.
Our criminal justice system is anything but that.
The wrong people are in jail.
Sure, killers should be restrained.
But this society lets white collar crime abound abundantly.
Pan and Dickinson are cut from the same cloth...the middle class.
Doctor, lawyer, they make the same message.
And it does not include working folks.
Ralph Nader had it right.
It's a choice between tweedle-dum and tweedle-dee.
Darrell Steinberg is the best that this region has put into the state house.
And that ain't sayin' much.
