Even though Elk Grove has a reputation for being a sport crazy town - a narrative driven by some of the council members - there are other under-appreciated aspects to the city. One such aspect for our community, is our body of public art.

Given the Elk Grove City Council's laser focus on developing multi-million dollar sports facilities, we wonder if their children were musicians or some other sort of performing artist, would their focus be different?

Elk Grove has so much potential to establish the city character by taking a stand to include a piece of public art in all new commercial or public buildings and new and existing parks. Right now Elk Grove is a cookie cutter mold. Old Town Elk Grove could become the pilot for intentional public art displays. Art draws tourists, money and interest into a community. We have a very diverse population it would be great to showcase our diversity with unique pieces of art around Elk Grove.

Oh, Elk Grove does art. Don't you remember the council directed staff to make sure an Elk or Stagecoach be the signature piece on top of each 76 foot highway sign coming to each exit off Hwy 99. The council indicated the EG Arts Council could design an Elk or Stage coach to affix to these freeway signs. Next up, a tall can of Mikey's Big Mouth on top of the Sheldon Exit to drive customers to the new gas station and pizza joint courtesy of Gil Moore. Oh, who says Elk Grove has no art. You just aren't looking in the right places.
