What do Nancy Chaires, Roger Dickinson, Darrell Fong and Nick Webster have in common?

All four candidates were endorsed by The Sacramento Bee for their respective seats in last Tuesday's election and all four were defeated.

Chaires was defeated by Steve Ly in the Elk Grove City Council race, Dickinson was beat by Dr. Richard Pan for California's Sixth Senatorial District, Fong lost to Jim Cooper for the Ninth California Assembly District, and Webster was one of three candidates for the Elk Grove Unified School District Board of Trustees who lost to Dr. Crystal Martinez-Alire.

There was one other race on Elk Grove ballots that the Bee issued an endorsement for and that was the hotly contested race between Dr. Ami Bera and Doug Ose. You can be assured one camp wants The Bee Jinx on the Elk Grove races to be broken, while the other hopes The Bee Jinx bats 1.000 in Elk Grove.

Time was an endorsement from a major metropolitan newspaper was gold. Over time, the significance of these newspaper endorsements has diminished to the point that in many cases they are more of an albatross around a candidates neck. If this trend continues, future candidates appearing on an Elk Grove ballot may be well-served to take a pass when the Sacramento Bee editorial board calls them downtown for an interview.

Just ask Chaires, Dickinson, Fong and Webster.
