At their Wednesday, February 24, 2016 meeting, the Elk Grove City Council heard an environmental appeal from an unexpected source. The appeal - to ban single-use plastic bags in Elk Grove - was made by students at Elk Grove's Elizabeth Pinkerton Elementary School Project Citizen Club.

Elk Grove City Council will not enact any laws on businesses that go beyond the minimum state law-period. Remember the Climate Action Plan? Remember the open space requirement on new development? Remember no trash cans in the parking lot of the new McDonalds on Bruceville? Remember no concrete paths for wheeling trash cans from the sideyard to your driveway? Remember no drought tolerant landscape requirements for new homes?
The sad thing here is that these young people care very much about the environment and it showed in their sincere presentation thinking they would gain support from the city council.
Steve “The Mentor” Detrick and his new protégé Pat Hume would never go for a ban on plastics bags. Hell, I would bet neither believes the plant needs any saving. Leave the mess for the next generation, right fellas?
Listen up, Detrick and Hume, those young people are the next generation and hopefully they will be able to clean up the mess you are leaving on both the city council and the local environment.
