A probationer was arrested yesterday after police responded to an in-progress theft in Elk Grove.

On Monday, October 18, Elk Grove Police officers were dispatched to the 9200 block of Laguna Springs Drive regarding an in-progress theft. Arthur Anthony Hernandez (pictured above), 36, of Elk Grove was observed stealing the tailgate from a parked vehicle and placing it in the back of a black SUV.

Officers arrived and located the SUV unoccupied parked nearby. Officers were directed to Hernandez who was walking away from the area. After detaining the suspect, a records check revealed that he was on probation.

A search of S-1 led to the discovery of burglary tools, and a records check showed that the SUV Hernandez had been driving was stolen out of Sacramento. The stolen tailgate was located in the back of the SUV.

Hernandez was arrested and booked into the county jail where he is being held on $75,000 bail but is not eligible for release. Arraignment is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, and Hernandez has a projected release date of April 17, 2017.
