Sights, Sounds of 2019 Sacramento Hmong New Year Celebration

November 25, 2018 |

Continuing a tradition that stretches for millennia, members of Sacramento's vibrant Hmong community marked their New Year with a celebration at Cal Expo.

The four-day event which started on Thanksgiving Day drew thousands of visitors who enjoyed  the culture, music, dance and of course freshly prepared food. As part of the event, Elk Grove Mayor Steve Ly, who is of Hmong descent, invited local media and members of local civic groups.

As host, Mayor Ly provided the group with a guided tour of the festivities and provided a lunch. During the lunch, guests were honored by the presence of several Hmong Veterans who valiantly fought side-by-side with and aided Americans in the Secret War in Laos during the Vietnam War.

Below is a video of some sights and sounds from the celebration on Saturday, November 24. Special thanks to Mayor Ly, the Veterans, and the leadership of Sacramento Hmong New Year, Incorporated for their warmth and hospitality during the visit.
