Yang announces candidacy for District 3 of Elk Grove Unified School District Board of Trustees

During a well-attended event this morning near Barbara Comstock Morse Elementary School in Sacramento, Xiong "Sean" Yang announced his candidacy for the Elk Grove Unified School District Board of Trustees. Yang is seeking the District 3 seat currently held by longtime EGUSD Trustee Chet Madison Sr.

Among those attending the event was Elk Grove Mayor Steve Ly, who spoke about Yang's commitment to serving the community. Before he was elected to the Elk Grove City Council and then mayor, Ly was elected as an EGUSD Trustee in 2012 and noted the job of a trustee, while very important can be difficult and takes considerable dedication and Yang is well-suited for the challenge.

"That's why Sean is doing this, that is the reason why I am endorsing and supporting Sean," Ly said.

During his presentation, Yang outlined guiding principles that he will work for if elected to the board. They included a safe learning environment, classroom resources, culturally relevant curriculum, and equity.

"I am running for Elk Grove Unified School District to make sure my vision becomes a reality," Yang said. "When I am elected as your Elk Grove school board [representaive], I will fight for every school to be great."

Others attending the event were Cosumnes Community Services Director Rod Brewer, recently appointed Elk Grove Planning Commissioner Tony Lin and Elk Grove District 3 City Council candidate Maureen Craft. Also in attendance was noted restauranteur C.C. Yen and founder of Asian Pacific Island Public Affairs who endorsed Yang's candidacy, and who like Yang is an immigrant.

"America is built by immigrants," he said. "People are still coming now because of freedom, equality."

As noted, the District 3 seat, which covers portions of south Sacramento, is currently occupied by Chet Madison Sr., and it is not known if he will seek a sixth term. Elk Grove Unified School elections are conducted on a from-district basis.
