In the closely watched District 8 race for the Sacramento City Council, the top two finishers in the five-candidate field appear headed toward a November general election runoff.

With 100-percent of precincts reporting, Mai Vang has 46-percent of the vote and in second place is Les Simmons, who has captured 30-percent. The three other contenders, Ronald Bell, Daphne Harris, and Santiago Morales took the other 24-percent of voters.

"With your heart and your hustle, we qualified for the runoff election in November and I couldn't be more proud of our campaign," Vang said last night in a social media posting to supporters.

With no candidate reaching the 50-percent plus one threshold, Vang and Simmons will compete for the seat being vacated by Larry Carr.

The next update for the race will be on Thursday, November 4 at 4 p.m.
