Oil companies spending $1.2 million for TV ads supporting Ashby in District 8 State Senate race

According to financial disclosures recorded today with the California Secretary of State, an independent expenditure committee is committing $1.2 for TV advertising in the closely watched District 8 California State senate race. The advertisements are recorded supporting Angelique Ashby, who is running against Dave Jones.

The commitment was made by the group called "Coalition to Restore California's Middle Class, Including Energy Companies who Produce Gas, Oil, Jobs and Pay Taxes."

Some of the business interests contributing to the independent expenditure committee include:
  • Valero $2,000,000
  • Chevron $2,000,000
  • Philips 66 - $2,000,000
  • Marathon Petroleum $1,000,000
Although both Democrats, Ashby has drawn the support of oil companies, a point Jones has made in his primary and current general election campaign. While Jones has asserted Ashby is an instrument of big oil, Ashby notes she has not directly taken money from oil companies.
