A current member of the Lodi City Council and his brother will be arraigned on several charges next week, according to the San Joaquin District Attorney's office.

Lodi City Councilmember Shakir Khan and his brother Zakir Khan face charges after a six-day preliminary hearing in San Joaquin Superior Court. The brothers will appear in Department 6D on Tuesday, February 21.

“The Honorable Judge Richard M. Mallett held the defendants to answer on numerous charges, including illegal gambling and money laundering,” San Joquin District Attorney Ron Freitas said. “I commend Deputy District Attorney Kelly McDaniel, Deputy District Attorney Todd Turner, and Paralegal Macie McKinstry for prosecuting this case.”

The brothers were questioned on suspicion of illegal gambling, money laundering, tax evasion, and Employment Development Department (EDD) fraud charges.

Councilmember Khan was arrested on October 28, 2020, a week before he won a seat on the city council. At the time of the arrest, the San Joquin County Sherriff's Department asserted Khan was one of seven suspects arrested during a lengthy investigation into several illegal gambling establishments.

At the time of his 2020 arrest, Khan denied the allegations.
