The Everlasting Flame of Memorial Day 2024: Honoring Sacrifice and Preserving Freedom of Speech and Thought

By a guest contributor who asked to be unnamed. |

Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, stands as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by countless men and women in defense of the principles upon which the United States of America was built. On this Memorial Day of 2023, we commemorate not only the valor of those who gave their lives in service but also the enduring importance of freedom of speech and thought, which lie at the very heart of our democracy.

As we reflect on the words of President John F. Kennedy's 1963 Memorial Day speech, we are reminded of the unyielding flame of liberty that burns within each of us and the duty we bear to honor the sacrifices made for its preservation.

President John F. Kennedy's Memorial Day speech in 1963 captured the essence of the solemn occasion, paying tribute to the brave men and women who had selflessly defended the nation's values.

He eloquently stated, "Our nation is built on the bedrock principle that governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed." These words serve as a timeless reminder of the fundamental tenet upon which American democracy rests, namely, the freedom of speech and thought.

The sacrifices made by our servicemen and women throughout history have protected and preserved this cherished liberty, ensuring that every American has the right to express their opinions and ideas openly and without fear.

The significance of freedom of speech and thought cannot be overstated. It is through the unfettered exchange of ideas, even those that challenge conventional wisdom, that progress is forged.

The American experiment has thrived because of the diversity of thought that has been fostered within its borders. Dissenting voices have shaped the course of the nation, driving it toward greater equality, justice, and inclusivity.

However, the right to freely express oneself has not come without its share of sacrifices. From the battlefields of the American Revolution, where patriots fought for independence, to the desolate fields of World War I and the treacherous shores of Normandy in World War II, brave soldiers have shed their blood and laid down their lives to safeguard the principles enshrined in the First Amendment. They understood that without the freedom to speak our minds, challenge authority, and advocate for change, the very essence of democracy would be diminished.

In honoring the sacrifices made by those who have fought and died in defense of freedom, we acknowledge the debt we owe to them. Their courage and commitment should inspire us to embrace the responsibility of being engaged citizens.

Today calls upon us to exercise our right to free speech and thought. It challenges us to reject complacency and to actively participate in the democratic process, shaping the future of our nation in a manner that honors the sacrifices of the fallen.

Memorial Day 2023 serves as a poignant reminder of the immense importance of freedom of speech and thought, reminding us that these cherished liberties were won at a great cost. President John F. Kennedy's words from his 1963 Memorial Day speech resound as strongly today as they did then, emphasizing the bedrock principle upon which the nation was built.

We must cherish and protect the right to express ourselves, to question, and to challenge, for it is through these freedoms that progress is achieved.

On this Memorial Day, let us remember and honor the brave men and women who have laid down their lives in the pursuit of liberty. Their sacrifices embody the enduring spirit of America, lighting the way for generations to come.

May we never take our freedom of speech and thought for granted, and may we use these precious gifts wisely to build a better future for all.

Thanks for a great article on this Memorial Day,Dan. I wonder how many will stop for just a brief moment today to acknowledge the price so many have paid for the privileges so many of us take for granted. And how eloquent a speaker our 35th president was. I’m sure Pierre Salinger had his hand in that speech, but the country hasn’t had a speech writer or orator so articulate and persuasive since 1963. Thanks for sharing that 1963 Memorial Day speech. Godspeed and best wishes to all in our city today.
