Mother & Son arrested by Elk Grove Police, son charged with attempted murder

Elk Grove Police announced a suspect has been arrested for multiple charges, including attempted murder of a person he was in a relationship with. Police took Xiu Liu, 37, into custody after police received two 9-1-1 hangup calls late last week.

According to police reports, the victim, who was in a long-term relationship with Xiu, arrived at his residence around 3:30 a.m. on Friday, August 4. A dispute between the female victim, who did not reside with her boyfriend, and the boyfriend's 61-year-old mother, who lived with her son, ensued.

The situation escalated when the mother slapped the girlfriend, and the boyfriend pushed the girlfriend to the ground and began to strangle her. Simultaneously, both the boyfriend and his mother threatened to harm the victim's family if she contacted the police.

Liu forcibly moved the victim to another room and continued to physically assault her. Liu then grabbed a firearm, pointed it at the victim, and again threatened her. The victim was able to call 9-1-1.

Responding officers detained Liu and his mother, identified as Yu Weng. During the investigation, Weng stated she was cold and asked if she could get a jacket and allowed officers to escort her inside the residence, where officers observed a short barrel-style rifle in plain view in the living room.

Detectives obtained a search warrant for the house, and the search led to the discovery of over $135,000 in cash, 2 pounds of a suspected controlled substance, 52 pounds of processed marijuana packaged for sale, two handguns, and one short-barreled rifle.

Weng was arrested on charges including possession of a controlled substance for sale, possession of marijuana for sale, criminal threats, possession of a short-barreled rifle, and preventing/dissuading a victim from reporting.

Liu was arrested and charged with attempted murder, domestic violence, assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment, kidnapping, possession of a controlled substance for sale, and possession of marijuana for sale.

Both were booked at the Sacramento County Main Jail and are held without bail.
