Senator Ashby, Assemblymember Nguyen targeted by momarmy.elkgrove over support of mental health AB 665

As part of their criticism of California legislation they find objectionable, the group calling itself monarmy.elkgrove has targeted Elk Grove's California legislative representatives.

The activist group known as monarmy.elkgrove is targeting California State Senator Angelique Ashby (D - Sacramento) and Assemblymember Stephanie Nguyen (D - Elk Grove) over their support of California Assembly Bill 665.

The group has criticized the two freshman legislators representing Elk Grove on Instagram for the legislation allowing minors to seek mental health services to discuss gender identity without parental consent (see video containing their social media posts below).

According to an April 14, 2023, Associated Press fact-check story, social media posts have been distorting the intents of the legislation. The story calls claims that it would allow minors to have gender-affirming surgery without parental concern false and "the bill does not authorize the state to remove minors from the custody of their parents."

Although momarmy.elkgrove group was not cited in the Associated Press story, some of their recent Instagram post directed at Ashby and Nguyen contain variations of those claims, most specifically lowering the "age of consent." Momarmy.elkgrove members have regularly appeared at Elk Grove School Unified School trustee meetings, voicing many concerns.

One of those concerns has included complaints about books in district school libraries they claim are pornographic. They have also said trustees have conducted themselves unprofessionally during public comment on non-agenda items.

The momarmy group has about two dozen chapters identified nationally on their website, although there appear to be many other groups listed on Instagram. Along with Elk Grove, there are groups in Sacramento, Lincoln, and Placer County.

Ashby and Nguyen's staff acknowledged receipt of an email seeking comment, but as of this posting, have not responded to an invitation to comment.

The monarmy.elkgrove group also mentioned two other pieces of legislation they oppose in their videos - Assembly Bill 957 and Assembly Bill 1078. Social conservatives, Republican state legislators, and supporters have also spoken against these bills.

Assembly Bill 665 passed both houses last week and awaits a decision by Gov. Gavin Newson.
