In what can only be called an embarrassment for Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen's quest for regional partners, this afternoon, Sacramento mayoral candidate Steve Hansen conceited defeat. Hansen, a former Sacramento City Councilmember, was one of four candidates seeking to replace Darrell Steinberg.
Results released this afternoon showed Hansen maintaining his fourth-place status, albeit by a larger gap behind third-place Richard Pan and second-place Kevin McCarty. Dr. Flo Cofer maintained and expanded her first-place standing.
With less than 7,000 uncounted ballots countywide, Cofer will finish first. McCarty and Pan are neck-to-neck in second place, although McCarty slightly expanded his lead.
In his concession, Hansen said "It was sooo close, but unfortunately we will not be advancing to the run off." He also acknowledged Cofer's first-place standing, saying, "Earlier today, I reached out to Dr. Flo Cofer and Assemblymember Kevin McCarty to congratulate them on advancing to the runoff and a hard-fought race."
Although Hansen said McCarty was advancing, Pan nor McCarty have posted statements on their campaign social media accounts regarding today's tallies.
Hansen's defeat is an embarrassment for Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen, who offered a full-throated endorsement (see video below). As she has since plans for the proposed multi-hundred million dollar relocation of the Sacramento Zoo, Singh-Allen has been discussing building regional partnerships.
Other elected officials undoubtedly embarrassed by their endorsement of the fourth-place finish Hansen are Democratic Congressman Ami Bera, Sacramento City Council members Eric Guerra and Lisa Kaplan, Elk Grove City Councilmember Sergio Robles, and Elk Grove Unified Trustee Michael Vargas.

Embarrassed or not, in the end it's all about me, me, me and filling out an endorsement list for her next campaign flyer. So in this case, she lists Steve Hanson as "Fmr. Sacramento City Council member"--no loss!
Politicians build endorsement lists so voters don't do a deep dive educating themselves on each candidate. Because knowledge is power, cheat sheets work best don't they? Today Measure E, tomorrow the Elk Grove Zoo!
