Dr. Flo Cofer wins first place in the Sacramento mayoral primary; Second place is still too close to call

Results posted this afternoon by the Sacramento County Voters Registration and Elections show Dr. Flo Cofer maintaining and extending her first-place standing in the Sacramento Mayoral primary race.

Cofer has captured 29 percent of the popular votes, with 29,628 votes, compared to 28 percent last Friday. With less than 7,000 uncounted votes countywide, Cofer has cemented her first-place finish and will advance to the November runoff.

The race for second place continues to be too close to call. Assemblymember Kevin McCarty maintains second place from last Friday with only 212 votes over Dr. Richard Pan.

McCarty has 21,964 votes to Pan's 21,752. Still within striking distance is former Sacramento City Councilmember Steve Hansen, who has 21,414 votes.

The three-candidate standings remain unchanged from last Friday, but McCarty's second-place lead over Pan grew slightly from 162 to 212 votes. The gap between McCarty and fourth-place candidate Hansen grew slightly from 531 on Friday to 550 votes today.

Hansen narrowed the gap between him and Pan for third place. On Friday, Hansen lagged Pan by 369 votes; today, it decreased to 338.

Given the closeness of the three candidates trailing Cofer, there will likely be a recount.
