Occasionally, Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen and her four city councilmen are harshly criticized during their regular meetings. While they may not like being called potted plants for their lack of curiosity, dullards for their inattention to details, or accused of conflicts of interest, to the best of our knowledge, they have never been physically threatened during an official meeting.
Aside from the occasional insult, they have yet to face what members of the Bakersfield City Council heard. During a recent meeting, they were subjected to a physical threat, as seen in the video below.
The person making the comments, Ms. Riddhi Patel, was arrested for making threats of physical violence and is held on a $2 million bail. According to the Bakersfield Californian, Patel faces "16 felony counts - eight counts of threatening with intent to terrorize, and eight counts of threatening the seven City Council members and the mayor."
The comments were made in the context of the city's enhanced security measure recently implemented at Bakersfield City Council meetings.
Ms. Patel was employed by Center on Race, Poverty, & the Environment when she made her threat. As noted in the Twitter posting below, she has been fired and the CRPE disavowed her action.
