Cosumnes Fire Dept. Chief Felipe Rodriguez finalist for top San Diego fire job

According to reports from the San Diego Union-Tribune, the fire chief of the Cosumnes Fire Department is a finalist for the city of San Diego Fire Department chief.

The three finalists are Cosumnes Fire Chief Felipe Rodriguez, Baryic Hunter of the Orange County Fire Authority, and San Diego Fire Department Deputy Chief Robert Logan. The trio is vying to replace retiring chief Colin Stowell.

According to the report, an online petition with over 1,000 signatures is urging San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria to select Logan. If the mayor selects one of the other candidates, it would be the first time in over two decades that the SDFD has gone outside the department to fill the top job.

The report notes that Rodriguez spent part of his firefighting career with the nearby Oceanside, Calif. Fire Department, where he was a battalion chief, fire marshal, and training chief. Logan has reportedly spent his entire career with the SDFC.

Following his tenure in Oceanside, Rodriguez became Folsom Fire Chief in 2017, followed by his current position with the Cosumnes Fire Department in October 2020. Rodriguez started his career with the Stockton Fire Department, where he held a variety of positions during his 13-year tenure.

As the selection process unfolds, it's worth noting that firefighters unions, known for their influential role in such decisions, could play a significant part. Mayor Gloria is expected to announce his selection in June, with the San Diego City Council confirming the appointment in July.
