A candidate challenging an Elk Grove Unified School District incumbent Trustee recently announced a significant endorsement.
Heidi Moore, who is challenging Carmine Forcina, announced that Rancho Cordova Mayor David Sanders has endorsed her candidacy. Moore lives in the portion of Rancho Cordova served by the EGUSD.
Sander's endorsement said, "Heidi brings enormous energy to a tough job - making sure our kids have the best educational opportunities."
In January, Forcina announced he would seek his fourth term this year. He was first elected to Area 7 in 2012 along with current Trustee Tony Lopez and former Trustee and Elk Grove Mayor Steve Ly.
Moore has made services for Rancho Cordova residents a pillar of her campaign. Along with other Rancho Cordova residents, Moore has been pressing the EGUSD to build junior and senior high schools in their community rather than bus those students to Elk Grove.
Before announcing her candidacy early this year, Moore frequently spoke at school board meetings. Much of her commentary centered on the hot-button issue of school libraries (see video below).
While the Trustee seat is non-partisan, Moore's viewpoints resonate with conservative and Republican ideologies. In previous elections, Forcina had the backing of the Democratic party.
Notably, Forcina showed understanding towards some of the concerns raised by Moore and others during the school district's deliberations on the school library policies, which were adopted in November. Forcina voted against the policy.
Moore and others criticized the policy, claiming it allowed inappropriate material into school libraries.
