Competitive races shaping up for Elk Grove Unified Board of Trustees

Like it was 12 years ago when three new members were elected to the Elk Grove Unified School District Board of Trustees, 2024 could bring significant changes to the seven-member governing board.
In 2012, current trustees Tony Perez, Carmine Forcina, and Steve Ly, who was subsequently elected to the Elk Grove City Council in 2014, won competitive races. This year, Forcina and Perez are facing challengers after serving for three terms.
In Area 1, Perez is being challenged by Susan Davis. Perez, who had the support of the Sacramento County Democratic party, has become known for frequent policy confrontations during board meetings with district staff and board colleagues.
Davis posted on Facebook earlier today, "I was joined by fellow candidates Jennifer Ballerini and Rehana Rehman Chaudhry, who are running for EGUSD Board Trustee positions. Our collaboration is already evident, and I can only imagine the positive impact we can have on our students, families, and staff if we continue to work together on the board."
While Davis has established a current campaign Facebook page, she has not filed papers with the Sacramento County Board of Elections as of today.
Two candidates are challenging three-year incumbent Forcina in Area 7. Much of Area 7 is in the city of Rancho Cordova, and voters in that area are concerned about the creation of new schools.
Heidi Moore declared her candidacy earlier this year. Before entering the race, Moore frequently spoke at board meetings with claims the school libraries contained pornographic literature.
While Moore has tapped down her book concerns and is now focusing on facility issues, she is running from a conservative perspective. Interestingly, Forcina tacitly supported positions advocated by Moore during board policy decisions.
The more recent candidate entering the Area 7 race is Rehana Rehman. While Rehman does not have specific policy positions on her personal Facebook page, she does have links to the Palestinian Children's Fund, which could indicate more progressive stances than Forcina and Moore.
In Area 6, incumbent Nancy Chaires-Espinoza will not seek another term. There are currently two candidates, Jennifer Ballerini and Jacqueline Ortiz.
Ballerini, a retired EGUSD employee, has interestingly listed one endorsement on her campaign website, from Trustee Carmine Forcina. Conversely, Ortiz has received endorsements from charter school advocates, including former Elk Grove Mayor Gary Davis and former EGUSD Trustee Al Rowlett, whom Forcina defeated in 2021.
Another significant endorsement for Ortiz is Jonathan Zachreson, a Roseville Unified School District Trustee. Zachreson, who heads the Protect Kids California group has been intimately involved in the so-called student transgender-outing movement that is illegal in California but legal in several conservative states.
