In her presentation, Ms. Bontrager provided a brief overview of the city's goals for opening a year-round homeless shelter on East Stockton Boulevard, just south of Elk Grove Boulevard, in City Council District 3. Between November 2023 and this April, the city contracted with Roseville, Calif.-based The Gatherings Inn to operate a temporary shelter they called a winter sanctuary in Old Town Elk Grove
Although that facility faced considerable opposition from Old Town residents and businesses, the city reported minimal disruptions in the neighborhood. With the help of the voter-approved Measure E consumer tax increase, the city will now operate a year-round homeless shelter at the site of the former Calvary Christian Center for at least four years.
Not surprisingly, Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen and her city council have been harshly criticized by nearby residents on various social media platforms. While the city did not directly address those concerns in the video, this is probably an effort to tamp down criticism.
Two open houses are planned for the shelter located at the 9499 E. Stockton facility. Those sessions are scheduled for Thursday, September 12, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and on Monday, September 16, between noon and 1:30 p.m
