At the April 7, 2025, Rancho Cordova City Council meeting, one longtime resident ridiculed a recent proposal.
Speaking during public comment on non-agenda items, Rancho Cordova resident Bonnie Penhall commented on the recent proposal to develop a Rocket-lie mascot for the suburban community. Focusing on the estimated cost of $1 million to research, develop, and launch the civic mascot, Ms. Penhall told the city council that taxpayers' money could be spent on more pressing needs for the community. See commentary in the video.
The idea surfaced during the March 17 meeting after city council members took a taxpayer-funded fact-finding mission to South Korea. Civic mascots are reportedly common in South Korea.
Even though the idea has been widely ridiculed, Rancho Cordova city staff is preparing a report to present at a future meeting.
The use of a rocket as the mascot is based on Aerojet's former presence in the city. The rocket manufacturing company was absorbed in a corporate takeover and seized operations in Rancho Cordova in 2016.
Even though they are long gone, Aerojet has left a lasting legacy by contaminating groundwater with jet fuel.

Anyone else think of the scene in Austin Powers when Doctor Evil is getting away? "That rocket looks like a giant..." *insert Willie Nelson cameo*
When the zoo gets built, maybe Elk Grove can borrow their rocket, build a launch pad and shoot one of our monkeys into space for publicity! Grover The Monkey can wave a big flag on camera promoting the Elk Grove Zoo!
