A mailer received by some Elk Grove voters this weekend, targeting State Senator Angelique Ashby, indicates the first-term senator may have a viable primary challenger during the June 2026 California Primary Election.
The mailer from Oakland-based Californian Environmental Voters criticizes Ms. Ashby for not voting to advance Senate Bill 222. According to the mailer, that legislation would have "allowed insurers and victims to reclaim losses from unnatural disasters caused by Big Oil.
Additonally, it said, "By not voting, Senator Angelique Ashby sided with Big Oil instead of solving our affordability crisis."
Introduced by Senator Scott Weiner, SB 222 failed to pass in the California Senate Judiciary Committee, on which Senator Ashby serves, in April 2025. The legislation needed seven votes to pass, but only received five, and Ashby was one of six legislators who did not vote, thus killing the legislation in committee.
During her successful November 2022 campaign, in which she narrowly defeated fellow Democrat Dave Jones, Ashby was portrayed as being beholden to big oil. While Ashby did not accept campaign contributions from oil or energy interests, several independent expenditure committees funded ads against Jones, effectively providing tacit support for Ashby.
On the California Environmental Voters website, a page is devoted to SB 222. On that page, the group lists Ashby and seven other Democratic and Republican Senators, saying "Ask Your Senator: Why Aren't Lawmakers Supporting Bills to Make California More Affordable?"
