League of Women Voters of California says it did not issue support for anti-redistricting cited in mailer

In a sign of what will be a hotly contested ballot initiative, the League of Women Voters of California has issued a statement regarding an implied stance they took on this November's controversial Congressional redistricting.

When visiting their site at lwvc.org, visitors are greeted with an immediate pop-up message, as shown in the image below.

Last week, a group called "Protect Voters First" sent a mailer statewide opposing legislation signed by California Gov. Gavin Newsom, which will put a congressional redistricting proposition on a special November ballot. That initiative, if approved by voters, would supersede Congressional districts drawn by California's Citizens' Redistricting Commission.

Last week's mailer contained only one personal endorsement, and it was from Gloria Chun Hoo, the President of the League. The mailer cites an opinion piece by Chun Hoo in the Sacramento Bee on July 30, 2025.

In a statement posted on their website and signed by the Chun Hoo, it said, "This implication is not correct - we are not part of that coalition. The League of Women Voters of California did not authorize this action" and "The statement by Gloria Chun Hoo was made before the final legislation was done, and was an effort to discourage tampering with the current system of independent redistricting. It is not the final opinion of LWVC on the measure that will be on the November ballot."

Although the non-partisan group does not endorse individual candidates, it will take positions on ballot initiatives. As noted in their statement, they have not issued a final opinion on the proposition.
