Today, Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a statement about the severe heat the state will experience over the next several days.

The statement said, "Governor Gavin Newsom continues to direct the state to take action ahead of anticipated higher temperatures across much of the state today through Saturday. Extreme heat is the deadliest weather-related hazard in California and the nation."

As part of the heat wave, the Governor is deploying assets in advance to fire-prone areas. Addtionally, the Newson's statement said, "The state entered Phase 2 of its extreme temperature response plan today – ramping up state and local coordination of resources to prepare for extreme heat. At the Governor's direction, the State Operations Center at the Governor's Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) is on an enhanced watch posture for both heat and fire conditions. Cooling centers to protect vulnerable residents are also opening in communities across the state."

A link in the press statement to the state's CalHeatScore webpage features an interactive statewide map showing forecasts by zip code. According to the map, Elk Grove is forecasted for severe conditions on Thursday and Friday, the highest rating on their scale (see images above and below).

Contrary to Governor Newsom's urging, Elk Grove is unlikely to open a cooling center as it does not meet its minimum heat requirements. As noted in the Governor's press release, a link to cooling centers statewide is available here.
