Elk Grove mayor triangulates, supports Repubs, some Dems

Elk Grove Mayor Gary Davis has thrown the heft as the current head of the Elk Grove city council to several hotly contested campaigns.

On the Democrat side, Davis' mug and a letter have appeared in Allyson Huber's mailer as she seeks election to the state assembly over Republican Jack Sieglock.

On the Republican side, Davis has tacitly supported Steve Detrick in his bid to unseat Republican Mike Leary from the Elk Grove city council by appearing on one of Detrick's mailers. This endorsement is probably more of a function of Davis' apparent desire to get Leary off the council.

One strange endorsement if Davis' endorsement of Cosumnes CSD candidate Jimmie Johnson. In Johnson's newspaper ads he touts bi-partisan support yet Davis is the only Democrat listed.

Although we have not covered the CSD election, Johnson is a conservative who some voters have compared to Davis' foe on the city council, Mike Leary. So Davis is endorsing a Leary-like clone in Jimmie Johnson?

Strange.

Another strange move, or actually lack of movement is Davis' distancing himself from fellow Democrat Katherine Maestas who is attempting to unseat Republican two-term council member Sophia Scherman.

Financial disclosure forms from Davis' '06 campaign for city council showed Davis paid Maestas' firm several thousand dollars for political services. In '08 nothing for Maestas from Davis.

Was there a falling out between Davis and Maestas? No way of knowing.

Or is Davis just hedging his bets and supporting only those, regardless of party, who he thinks will win office and thus help him in the future runs for higher office like state assembly.

If this is his strategy, it is not without risk. An earlier poster on this site felt that Leary can still beat Detrick.

If Leary wins, can you imagine the friction between Davis and Leary? Can you imagine the payback motivation Leary will have against any other run Davis makes?

Furthermore, just how loyal is Davis to his party? If his actions in this election are any indication, he is as loyal as needs to be to stay in office.

Mayor Gary Davis latest meddling in local races has made him an untrustworthy ally to both Democratic and Republican candidates. He has sent a clear and indirect message to his friends and allies as well as opponents that he will sacrifice them for his own self-interest no matter what. This is evident in Davis-Katherine alliance fall out whereas Davis supported fellow council member Sophia. Davis wants to make sure Katherine has no opportunity to run against him in future assembly race. This stab-in-the-back mentality will get Davis nowhere as no one will ever trust him. Using his political position to further his political and future ambition is no only unethical, lack of self-respect and respect for others, but is inappropriate for a character of a city mayor. There is no doubt Mayor Gary Davis will be the loneliest councilman in town regardless of who wins in District 1, 2, or 3. Burning an executive board member of the Democratic Party for your own political gain is not only ill, but also political career limiting move. This is the beginning to the end of your political career. Sorry Gary Davis, no one likes a traitor.

Gary Davis is what I want in an elected official. He represents someone who can look past party lines and select the best person for the job. This will get him far in life because you need bi-partisan support. We Americans can't get caught up in party politics. Local races are non-partisan. Where partisanship matters, it is clear where Davis stands. The only traitors are those blinded by being a zealot. No thanks! Good job Gary Davis is taking bold steps. This is a testament to real leadership.

I am also a long time EG resident. Being bi-partisan while you govern is one thing, doing it during the election is quite another.

Davis has crossed the line and is simply pandering for his own personal ambitions, not the good of the community.

Why hasn't Pat Hume dipped his toe in the water?
