Video: Ly saturates Elk Grove voters' mailboxes - possible preemptive strike?

October 25, 2018 |

Faced with the biggest threat to his short, but quickly rising political career, Steve Ly is pulling out all the stops in his bid to win a second term as Elk Grove mayor. Ly, who was elected mayor in 2016 after serving just two years on the Elk Grove City Council and two years as a trustee on the Elk Grove Unified School District, is facing fordable challenges from Tracie Stafford and his city council colleague, Darren Suen.
Along with several supporter testimonial videos, he has started distributing, Ly has saturated the mailboxes of many Elk Grove voters. Between Monday, October 22 and Wednesday, October 24, some Elk Grove voters received as many as three separate mailers (see video below).
Since last week when the independent expenditure committee the Alliance to Protect the Middle-Class surface with attack ads at him, Ly has increased the volume and types of advertisements. Notably, in recent days the APMC has filed disclosures noting expenditures for the design and distribution of mailers.
Each mailer addresses specific issues including the much-discussed traffic congestion problem, economic development, and endorsements. While mailers are part of the standard operating procedure of local political campaigns, even by most standards three mailers is three days can be considered a saturation campaign. Sources claim the APMC will drop an attack mailer in the coming days. The mailer is said to feature a picture of Ly in a tuxedo taken from his Facebook page that has already appeared in several paid online advertisements.
If the attack mailer does appear in the coming days, Ly's brain trust might have used the video testimonials and mailers as a preemptive strike. Curiously Ly, who had an independent expenditure committee in 2016 that spent $100,000 in support of his campaign, has been silent on the attack ads.
