Ly's intern, political consultant subject of attack mailer; mailer sent by Ly addresses 'negative campaigning'

November 1, 2018 |

If negative political advertising is an indicator of a hotly contested race, then the campaign for Elk Grove mayor has become red hot.

In a follow-up to a series of online advertisements and mailers, another attack piece from the independent expenditure committee opposing Steve Ly calling themselves the Alliance to Protect the Middle Class (APMC)  was distributed to Elk Grove voters today. While the others have directly attacked Ly, this one uses a different tactic by focusing on allegations against one of his political consultants.

The mailer (posted below), A man is Known by the Friends he Keeps, aims at one of Ly's paid political consultants, Ty Sorci, who also works as one of Ly's part-time interns at city hall. Using black and white photographs on black and red graphics, one side shows a picture of Ly and Sorci and on the other are legal documents.

The documents displayed, which could not be independently verified, appear to be a lawsuit between Sorci and Daniela Cima-Sorci. The court document noted the suit, which lists the Sacramento County Department of Child Support Services and an intervener and respondent, was filed in the State of California's Third Appellate District in Sacramento.

With a filing date of October 30, 2017, the document starts by saying "Tyson S. Sorci (Father) appeals from an order the registration of an Italian child support and spousal support pursuant to the Uniform Interstate Family Support..."

The accompanying page, which is partially blocked, provides some of the claims in the purported case. The document shows it was certified for publication on November 27, 2017, but does not include the decision.

The message on the mailer further claims Ly hired someone, without specifying Sorci, who has unpaid child support who also left a $200,000 a year position with the California Highway Patrol "under a cloud of scrutiny." The mailer does not say what the conditions, if valid, were when Sorci left the CHP.

Since the attack ads and mailers were launched over two weeks ago, the Ly campaign has not responded to inquiries regarding the actions of the APMC. Additionally, there have been no attack ads from the Ly campaign or his two opponents, Tracie Stafford and Elk Grove Vice Mayor Darren Suen, nor have any further independent expenditure committees been formed in support of or opposition to Ly, Suen and Stafford as of today.

Although Ly has not responded to inquiries over the attack ads, coincidentally voters today received a mailer called Mayor Steve Ly Responds to Negative Campaigning.

On the flip side, the campaign does not directly respond to the attack ads other than say Elk Grove Deserves Better. Instead, there is a compendium of items under three headings including Elk Grove City Council/Mayor, Elk Grove School Board, and Ongoing Projects (see below).

Ly, Stafford, and Suen did not respond to an email requests seeking comment as of posting time. In an earlier story on the APMC mailers, Stafford condemned the practice saying they had no place in this campaign.

Reached at Ly's campaign office late this afternoon, Sorci said he was aware of the mailer and called it "pretty low," but offered no further comment citing a conference call that required his participation. As of deadline, Sorci did not accept an invitation to comment further on the matter.

Related to the APMC mailers, Andres Ramos, who is running for Elk Grove City Council against Pat Hume for the District 2 seat, posted an entry on his Facebook page late this afternoon regarding the use of images from the attack ads. The person posting the comment made derogatory ethnic comments seemingly directed at Ly.

That posting and the comments can be seen here
