On Thursday, January 23, 2020, the City of Elk Grove held grand opening festivities for its new community center. The new facility, which includes the Elk Grove aquatic center, is part of the civic center area that the city has named District 56, after the size of the parcel.

The ceremony, which was standing room only with several hundred people gathered in the main hall, also offered visitors an opportunity to tour the entire facility. Also housed in the community center is the relocated Elk Grove Senior Center and the newly opened Veteran's Hall.

Among elected officials speaking at the ceremony where Congressman Dr. Ami Bera, Sacramento County Supervisor Don Nottoli, SMUD Ward 4 Director Rosanna Heber, and Elk Grove Mayor Steve Ly. Representatives from Assemblymember Jim Cooper and State Senator Richard Pann attended, and the innovations were offered by the Elk Grove Interfaith Council and members of the Wilton Rancheria.

Among people recognized by Mayor Ly was former Elk Grove City Councilmember Sophia Scherman. A longtime advocate for a Veterans center, Scherman was instrumental in having their facility incorporated in the community center.

Along with touring the facilities, visitors were entertained by a harpist and offered refreshments and a variety of hors d'oeuvres. Participants were also encouraged to have their picture taken as part of a mosaic that is being assembled.

Branded as District56, the city hopes the facilities will become a central gathering point for residents and visitors. Along with the swimming pool, plans for the area include a shopping center, and the city intends to market the community center's various meeting rooms for wedding receptions and corporate events.

I was not in attendance at yesterday's event, so I can say with certainty, put in this picture it looks like Mayor Ly is being disrespected by two of his city council colleagues. Not that Mr. Ly probably had anything of great importance to say during his comments, but could not have Councilmembers Nguyen and Suen waited a few moments to exchange whispers? At least Mr. Detrick and Mr. Hume gave the appearance of listening.
