In the race to fill Elk Grove's District 3 City Council seat, Kevin Spease has led the five-candidate field since the first release of tallies last night.

The latest tallies released after 1 a.m. today, showed Spease in first place with 3,044 votes for a total of 32-percent of the 9,360 votes counted. This year is the first time Elk Grove has voted for city councilmembers on a by-district basis.

According to information compiled by Poltical Data Inc., of the 24,302 ballots mailed to District 3 voters, as of Monday, 14,120 had been returned.

This number does not include ballots received by mail or submitted yesterday which could push the pool of ballots higher. There could be up to 5,000 votes to be counted for the district.

Although he has not declared victory, Spease posted a social media message expressing confidence that he would continue to hold the lead as tallies are updated. The next release by Sacramento County Voter Registration and Elections will be this Friday at 4 p.m.
