A second 'Drive Out The Hate' event scheduled for this Saturday in Elk Grove

UPDATED 6:45 p.m. April 9 |

Following on the success from their initial "Drive Out The Hate Event" caravan and rally a week and a half ago in Sacramento, Asian Resources Inc. will hold a similar event this Saturday in Elk Grove.

The event is scheduled between 9 and 11 a.m., and the vehicle parade route will start at the Pavillion area of Elk Grove Regional Park and make its way to Elk Grove's District56 parking lot. The route is tentatively routed to travel north on East Stockton Boulevard to Elk Grove Boulevard and west to the District 56 facility on Big Horn Boulevard and Civic Center Drive.

At the March 27 event, after the parade concluded, participants heard from several groups participating in the event and Sacramento elected officials, including Mayor Darrell Steinberg and City Councilmembers Eric Guerra and Mai Vang. A similar format is expected at this weekend's event, but what elected officials will be featured speakers has not been announced.

The event will highlight the growing problem of hate crimes nationally directed toward people of Asian descent. Elk Grove is estimated to have at least 28-percent of its residents of Asian ancestry.

Sacramento-based ARI is led by Stephanie Nguyen, who is also Elk Grove Vice Mayor. At the last event, Nguyen delivered an impassioned speech denouncing the rise in hate crimes against Asians, which at that time had just claimed eight people in a Georgia mass shooting.

Among other groups sponsoring the event is Asian Pacific Island Public Affairs, the Sacramento Asian Chamber of Commerce, My Sisters House, and Sacramento Asian Peace Officers Association.
